The Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Nunney Church takes place on Wednesday 23 May at 6pm in the church. Everyone is welcome.
Ken Lloyd, Chairman of the Friends of Nunney Church (FONC), summed up the past year as follows in the latest FONC newsletter:
This time last year we were in the final stages of finishing the roof restoration project and slightly worried that we had enough cash coming in to pay the final invoice to our architects, builders and surveyors etc.
In the event, when all the VAT was recovered and all the Gift Aid came in, we actually finished the job with a few thousand left in the bank.
Everyone involved deserves a pat on the back for this 10-year effort.
What a marvellous year 2017 turned out to be. The internal scaffolding came down on 10 April and we got the first glimpse of the finished ceiling. On Friday 5 May the church was cleared by the builders and ready for action.
The first service in the church was held on 7 May and I had the immense pleasure of playing piano for the service looking up at the new ceiling and enjoying the enormous improvement in the acoustics of the new space.
The Bishop of Bath and Wells graced us with his presence on 13 May and officially re-opened and re-consecrated the church.
The church was naturally packed to capacity and I was able to thank all the many people who had contributed to bring this great project to fruition. We will shortly be putting a brass plaque in the church thanking by name all the institutions who had given us grants.
We were proud to be given a highly commended certificate by the National Churches Trust for coming second in a National competition. This award (The King of Prussia Gold Medal) goes to the Architect for the best church restoration of the year.
I also received on behalf of the Friends an award for Somerset Fundraiser of the Year.
At this year’s AGM, which has been fixed for the evening of 23 May at 6 pm in the church, I will make a presentation with photos taken during the roof restoration showing how the job was done and what the new structure looks like hidden above the ceiling.
The Friends have also recently paid out £990 for an update and extension to the sound system in the church.
After much discussion at the Friends meetings and the Church and PCC committees it has been decided that the next project for the Friends is to install a lavatory in the church. This will be combined with a refurbished kitchen and a properly organised meeting room.
I should have designs and drawings to show at the AGM and perhaps some good estimates of the amount we have to find to fulfil this task. Although a much smaller project than the one for the roof it might still be around £50,000 in total.
With this newsletter we will be sending also a request for subscriptions to the Friends and asking once again for your generous help in making our church the living centre of our lovely village community.
