Two world-class Italian musicians perform Baroque music on harpsichord and recorder at Nunney Church on Wednesday 25 September.
Romeo Ciuffa (recorder) and Pietro delle Chiaie (harpsichord) will perform in Nunney Church as part of a week of recitals in the UK. They are both soloists with the Roma Baroque Consort and also members of the Cappella Musicale Enrico Stuart, with Frascati Cathedral as their base.
Their schedule includes an organ recital by Pietro at Westminster Cathedral in London (Sunday 22 September), a Masterclass and recital by both at the Royal College of Music (Monday 23 September), a lunchtime organ recital by Pietro at Bristol Cathedral (Tuesday 24 September) and a Gala Concert at Colston Hall in Bristol at 7.30pm that night.
The Raise the Roof concert in Nunney starts at 7pm (not 7.30pm!) and is entitled ‘An evening in London… 1700‘. Romeo Ciuffa and Pietro delle Chiaie will perform sonatas by Sammartini and other London composers. Pietro will be using a beautiful Flemish harpsichord.
Cappella Musicale Enrico Stuart (CMES) specialises in 17th and 18th century repertoire in which wind instruments take centre stage.
The group takes its name from Henry Benedict Stuart, the younger brother of Charles Edward Stuart (“Bonnie Prince Charlie”) who tried unsuccessfully to reconquer the English throne in 1745). Henry became Cardinal Bishop of Frascati (CMES’s base) in 1761 and Dean of the College of Cardinals in 1803. He continued to live in the episcopal palace of Frascati until his death on 13 July 1807. He improved the town cultural life by founding the Seminary and library.
The library contains various musical scores including a Magnificat by Porpora, commissioned by Henry Stuart himself, benefactor and patron of the arts of Frascati for more than thirty years.
Although initially CMES was formed by a choir and a varying instrumental ensemble, the group is now a mainly instrumental ensemble which occasionally presents – depending on the programme – a number of soloist voices.
CMES’s current line-up has played in Italy, Germany, the UK, Spain, Canada, Syria, Zambia, Russia, France, Finland, Holland, Czech Republic and many other countries.

This is the 16th concert in of a series of regular Raise the Roof concerts in aid of Nunney Church Raise the Roof Appeal.
The concert takes place on Wednesday 25 September from 7pm at Nunney Church of All Saints. Please note that the concert starts at 7pm, not 7.30pm.
Tickets are available from Paul Dowbekin for a suggested donation of £10 each.
