The Nunney village hall pétanque club is starting again on Wednesday 30 May from 7pm. First timers are very welcome to have a try.
The club meets every Wednesday night until the end of August. Everyone’s welcome to join in and play pétanque (boules) on the pitch at Nunney Village Hall. You don’t need any particular skills or fitness level. Bring your own bottle!
As before, a season’s membership (June to August) is £5, and just £1 for each evening you play. First-timers are very welcome to try out for £1.
Nunney Village Hall Committee has been striving to improve the facilities and activities available to the local community at the village hall in the last few months. It has laid down a pétanque pitch and begun regular petanque evenings on Wednesdays from 7pm.
Games using balls and a small jack can be traced back to Egyptian times or even before. All similar modern games have been based on these earlier sports, with changes being made either due to the countries in which they were played or by the development of new manufacturing techniques. In the 20th century these allowed the balls, of whatever size, to be manufactured in steel rather than wood.
In Europe even now there are several sports fairly similar to Pétanque. Jeu de Provençal (the game from which Pétanque was developed) and Boule Lyonnaise played primarily in France, Bocceplayed in Italy, and of course Green and Crown Bowls played extensively in Great Britain.
Currently there 70 countries affiliated to the Federation International de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal, the world governing body for the sport.
Petanque in Somerset
So why does Pétanque have such a wide appeal? There are several reasons but possibly the main reason is that few sports can offer such a wide range benefits to players of both sexes over a very wide range of age groups, and on equal terms. It can truly be called a sport for all the family.
Why not join in and play (or watch others play) pétanque at Nunney Village Hall on Wednesday evenings? This is very informal and all are welcome. You are invited to bring your own wine.
There’s no need to bring anything else, because the Nunney Village Hall Committee has plenty of petanque sets waiting for you.
Season’s membership £5 each plus an additional charge of £1 per evening.
