Rev. Percy Clough as Father Christmas

Rev. Percy Clough as Father Christmas

As this photo shows, the tradition of Father Christmas travelling through the village dates back to at least the 1940s.

We found this photo in the Somerset Record Office in Taunton. It shows the Rev. Percy Clough as Santa being pulled down Horn Street on his sleigh.

Percy Clough followed his father as vicar of Nunney. His father previously led a parish in Manchester.

Percy held in great affection by the village and was the natural choice as chairman of all sorts of committees. He was vicar of Nunney throughout the war and chaired the Invasion Committee, for example.

His daughter was a keen photographer and may well have taken this particular photo.

The modern Santa sleigh tours Nunney and surrounding villages courtesy of the Frome Rotary Club and Nunney Community Association (NCA).

It is an altogether bigger and louder affair that nevertheless never fails to bring a smile to the faces of children of all ages.
