John Challis was born in Bristol, but grew up in South East London. Despite countless appearances in TV shows and on stage, he is still instantly recognisable as Boycie from the long-running comedy show.

He played Terrance Aubrey ‘Boycie’ Boyce in Only Fools and Horses and its spin-off The Green Green Grass opposite actress Sue Holderness (Marlene) between 1981 and 2009.

The comedy classic also featured market trader Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter (played by David Jason) and his younger brother Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst) who live in a council flat in Nelson Mandela House in Peckham, South London.

John Challis in NunneyChallis, who lives in Herefordshire with his wife Carol, played his one-man show Only Fools and Boycie at the Strode Theatre in Street on Saturday evening. The next day he went to the Kilver Court shopping outlet in Shepton Mallet and visited Nunney Castle before enjoying a meal in The George at Nunney.

Challis clearly enjoyed his visit to our village, posting photos on social media and telling his fans, “You have GOT to see Nunney Castle near Frome” and adding, “I found The George at Nunney a real gem. Great food and a nice place to be. Recommended.”

He later bid his fans on Twitter (@BeingBoycie) goodnight in typical Boycie style: “Bonnet de douche to you all. May you sleep snug as bugs in a rug.”

The actor is a keen networker on social media. He was advised by some of his 44,000 followers on Twitter to visit Nunney after posting photos of Nunney Castle earlier this week and sharing that he had only recently discovered that his late mother came from Somerset.

John Challis also generously repeatedly called on his fans to vote for Visit Nunney in the final round of the Good Web Guide Website of the Year.

A Jolly Boys Reunion 2014 of actors from Only Fools and Horses (not including Del Boy and Rodney) will take place at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham on 22 November. Information about the latest books by John Challis is available at
