From Monday 3 June all enquiries for Mendip District Council will be directed to just one, local rate number – 0300 303 8588.
The current Mendip District Council contact number receives more than 100,000 calls a year in relation to the wide range of public services it delivers.
Following a review of service delivery in 2012 and listening to customer feedback regarding the separate numbers for Revenues and Benefits, out of hours and Mendip customer services, the council made the decision to consolidate under one local rate number and service to be delivered by a regional shared service centre operated by Capita.
The council claims that the changes will provide additional resilience to the service to meet peak demand periods and deliver guaranteed call answering times and reduced wait times in busy periods.
Implementing these changes will not only deliver savings of approximately £40,000 a year of tax payers’ money but will also improve response times for customers.
Chris Atkinson, corporate manager for access to services, said: “By introducing one local rate number for our customers we will make getting in touch with Mendip District Council even easier than before. We have listened to our customers and I am confident that these changes will see customers receiving a more responsive service whilst also providing improved value for money.”
Cllr Graham Noel, portfolio holder for access to services, said: “The decision to change the council’s telephony service, one of the council’s busiest services, was not taken lightly. However, the new service should lead to a marked improvement for residents and businesses who choose to contact the council by phone.”
