East Somerset Railway

Enjoy a relaxed, unhurried and civilised journey on a steam train at the East Somerset Railway.

East Somerset Railway

East Somerset Railway hosts many special events throughout the year, such as the popular Days out with Thomas and the Santa Trains.

You can also learn to drive a steam engine on one of the Footplate Experience courses.

The East Somerset Railway is a 2.5 mile (4 km) heritage railway in Somerset, running between Cranmore and Mendip Vale.

The line was originally between Witham railway station and Shepton Mallet and this line opened on 9 November 1858. It was planned by Mr. Brunel.

The railway was once part of the former Cheddar Valley line that ran from Witham to Yatton, meeting the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway at Wells.

The train runs through the Doulting Railway Cutting Site of Special Scientific Interest. The section between Cranmore and the mainline is used for heavy quarry traffic to the nearby Merehead Quarry.

In 1991, a new station building was constructed at Cranmore which now includes a cafe, booking office, gift shop and toilets. The platform then extends to the old station which is now a museum.

Seeing the trains in all their glory brings a real sense of history to your visit and there is always plenty to see, its an experience for everyone.

Three course meals are served on the Mendip Belle dining train – or afternoon Cream Tea in the summer. The Whistlestop restaurant is open when East Somerset Railway is in steam with home cooked food made from local produce.

The East Somerset Railway operates steam trains throughout the year.
