Explore your local and family history

The South West Heritage Trust is launching a new programme of courses designed to help people explore their local and family history.

Somerset Heritage Centre

The courses will be held at the Somerset Heritage Centre in Taunton.

The local and family history courses start in November and will be held at the Somerset Heritage Centre in Taunton. The centre provides access to 20 million historic documents and local history sources, the earliest of which dates from the 8th century.

The Nunney market charter of 1260 is housed here, as are deeds, documents and photos of our village’s history all the way up to the present. Flyers and posters for 2012 Nunney Street Market & Fayre were among the latest items to be accepted.

The collection is a major source of information for Visit Nunney’s own local history research, alongside online resources such as Ancestry.co.uk, Google Books and the British Library’s online newspaper archive.

The 2016–17 courses will focus on how to use and interpret key archive sources for a range of topics including house, family and local history. They will be tutored by experienced archivists from the heritage centre.

The archives at the Somerset Heritage Centre in Taunton contains stacks of ancient deeds for Nunney properties and land.
