Film Night: The Children Act

The Children Act is shown at Nunney Village Hall on Friday 11 January, presented by Somerset Moviola and the Nunney Village Hall Committee.

The Children Act

The Children Act is a 2017 drama film directed by Richard Eyre, produced by Duncan Kenworthy, and written by Ian McEwan, based on his 2014 novel of the same name. It stars Emma Thompson, Stanley Tucci, and Fionn Whitehead.

As her marriage to Jack (Stanley Tucci) flounders, eminent High Court judge Fiona Maye (Emma Thompson) has a life-changing decision to make at work – should she force a teenage boy, Adam (Fionn Whitehead), to have the blood transfusion that will save his life?

Her unorthodox visit to his hospital bedside has a profound impact on them both, stirring strong new emotions in the boy and long-buried feelings in her.

Peter Debruge of Variety gave the film a positive review, writing, “The Children Act is that rarest of things: an adult drama, written and interpreted with a sensitivity to mature human concerns.”

Stephen Farber of The Hollywood Reporter also gave the film a positive review, saying, “The two central performances could hardly be better. Thompson works here with remarkable subtlety.”

The Children Act has a 12A rating. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult.

Adults planning to take a child under 12 to view a 12A film should consider whether the film is suitable for that child.
