Big flavours are created with wonderful fresh ingredients from local suppliers. The meat comes from next door, the amazing Cayfords Butcher who source from nearby farms.
Bistro Lotte has plenty of enticing vegetarian and vegan options. Their gallettes are gluten and wheat-free and the cheese board of course showcases Somerset’s finest!
Wines are served in carafes from the fabulous ‘More Wine Please’ and the team bakes homemade sourdough bread daily.

The Talbot Inn, Mells
The Talbot Inn is a traditional yet stylish coaching inn located in the heart of the historic village of Mells, 5 minutes from Nunney in some of Somerset’s most stunning countryside. The Inn itself has been welcoming travellers since the 15th Century, when it was built as a rest stop for coaches running the London to Wells road.
The Talbot offers great food in a classic pub environment. There is a main bar, snug, courtyard and map rooms which are all open every day for classic pub food and drink. Upstairs there are 8 bedrooms, two with adjoining children’s rooms. Separated by a cobbled courtyard is the 500 year old sitting Room, Coach House Grill Room and a pretty garden. In the Coach House Grill Room, which is open Friday to Sunday, food is simply grilled over a charcoal and wood fire in the way country inns cooked hundreds of years ago.
Mells is a very pretty Estate village best known from the nursery rhyme Little Jack Horner. According to legend, Jack Horner was the steward of the last Abbot of Glastonbury who helped himself to the deeds of Mells Manor after the Abbot had hidden them in a pie intended for King Henry VIII.
The war poet Siegfried Sassoon is buried in the grounds of the parish church – a 15th century gem with stained-glass windows by Sir William Nicholson. Sir Edwin Lutyens, who designed the stunning Mells Park House and London’s Cenotaph, also also designed the local war memorial, bus shelter and a lane of trees behind the church.
Mells Manor is home to the Asquith family, renowned for their influence on British political and intellectual life. The Asquiths carry the ancient title of Earls of Oxford. The village played a major part in bringing to an end Apartheid in South Africa, after negotiations between ANC leader Thabo Mbeki and representatives of the South African government took place at Mells Manor over a period of 10 years. Mbeki later served two terms as the second post-Apartheid President of South Africa from 14 June 1999 to 24 September 2008.
Goodfellows, a fish restaurant named after chef and owner Adam Fellows, is in the historic heart of Wells, a step from the famous Gothic cathedral. Although the Saddler Street Café is excellent too, our recommendation is for the fish restaurant with its outstanding Tasting Menu.
Reviews describe the food as art, the setting pure theatre, with tables arranged round an open kitchen. Adam combines his love of fresh West Country produce with a passion for fish and the flavours of Mediterranean cuisine, learned from an apprenticeship in some of the greatest kitchens in Europe. Adam has already achieved two red AA rosettes and placed on three occasions in The Times’ Top 10 Restaurants.
You can choose quiet and private dining upstairs – or all the excitement of theatre-in-the-round downstairs, with the focus on a central, open kitchen where Adam and his team prepare fish freshly caught locally or off the coasts of Devon and Cornwall. You can choose from the constantly changing Market Menu or opt for the six-course Tasting Menu, which showcases five of the restaurant’s most popular dishes plus dessert.
There is plenty to choose from too for those who prefer meat – or for vegetarians, for that matter. All are cooked to order by the team, to original recipes with a modern European emphasis. Textures are light, flavours intense, everything on the plate – vegetables, sauces, dressings – designed to complement the natural taste of the fish. Do leave space for dessert, because Goodfellows turns desserts into beautifully presented masterpieces you won’t want to miss!
