Fraudsters target elderly

Avon & Somerset Police have issued a warning that retired people are the target of fraudsters.

Telephone fraudRecently there have been several reports of fraud occurring. These have been predominantly in the North Somerset area, but it is possible that this will occur in other parts of Somerset, including Nunney.

Essentially retired persons appear to be targeted with a phone call. The caller claims to be from the police and indicates there has been a problem with the use of the victim’s credit card.

The caller asks the victim to call them back and gives a number. The end result of this is that a number of people have so far been conned out of several thousand pounds – each.

Police are investigating this matter, but your help is needed too.

  • Encourage anyone subject to such a matter in the last few days to contact the police immediately – by phoning 101.
  • Encourage residents receiving an unsolicited call from someone alleging to be from the police to take care. If they ask you to call them back on a number, please do not do so.

The number for the Avon & Somerset Constabulary switchboard is 101. This is the number that should be used if anyone receives this type of telephone call.
