Somerset Moviola, BFI Neighbourhood Cinema and the Nunney Village Hall Committee present Gemma Bovery, on Friday 4 December at Nunney village hall.

gemma_bovery_ver3_xlgGemma Bovery is a 2014 French-British comedy-drama film based on Posy Simmonds’ 1999 graphic novel of the same name. Directed by Anne Fontaine, the film stars Gemma Arterton, Jason Flemyng, Mel Raido, and Fabrice Luchini

Martin (Fabrice Luchini), an ex-Parisian with a deep appreciation for Gustave Flaubert, has settled in a village in Normandy as a baker. He sees a British couple moving into an old property across the road.

Their names, Gemma (Gemma Arterton) and Charles Bovery (Jason Flemyng), echo those of the leading characters in Flaubert’s 1856 masterpiece Madame Bovary.

Martin engages with the young couple and observes Gemma’s behaviour replicates that of her namesake, including a series of romantic and sexual liaisons that suggest she is headed for a tragic finale like that of the novel.

He intervenes but cannot alter the inevitable conclusion.

An affectionate ‘take’ of Flaubert’s novel Madame Bovery with a light-hearted dissection of marital relationships and infidelity.

Gemma Arterton is excellent in the title role of this charming film. Terrific fun as we head towards Christmas once again. Come and join us!

Gemma Bovery has a 15 rating. No-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or buy/rent a 15 rated video. 15 rated works are not suitable for children under 15 years of age.

According to the International Movie Database (IMDb): “Seeing that it’s a French movie, most of the characters consume alcohol (wine) throughout the entire movie. In many scenes an elderly man is seen smoking. A woman and man screams out the F-word every now and then in the film; although spoken in French it appears in the English subtitles.”

Gemma Bovery is shown at Nunney Village Hall on Friday 4 December at 7.30pm. Door open at 7.00pm. Seats cannot be reserved, so please come early.

Tickets cost £5.00 in advance at the SPAR shop in Nunney or £6.00 on the door. A licensed bar and ice creams will be available – plus a seasonal glass of mulled wine!
