Hauser & Wirth Somerset is a new world-class contemporary art gallery in Bruton.

Durslade Farm is a Grade II listed farm on the outskirts of Bruton. The farmhouse and outbuildings at Durslade were used during the filming of Chocolat in 2000, starring Johnny Depp, Juliette Binoche and Dame Judi Dench.

The farmhouse, barns and other outbuildings have now been lovingly converted into a very high quality art gallery set in stunning gardens. The cow shed, piggery and other outbuildings are now linked by two new wings to form an enclosed external courtyard.

The new gallery opened on 14 September 2014. Hauser & Wirth has leading art galleries all over the world. The Somerset galleries host regularly changing exhibitions of contemporary art, as well as performances by the Bristol Old Vic and others.

Hauser & Wirth Somerset also organises a wide range of special events, such as talks, seminars, workshops and screening, as well as an extensive learning programme for families, young people and schools.

The site includes a bookshop and learning room, with plans to open a farm shop selling local produce in spring 2015. The Farmhouse is used as accommodation for visiting guests and artists. The Roth Bar & Grill serves locally sourced, seasonal produce.

Sustainability, heritage and education are recurring themes at Hauser & Wirth Somerset. Design, setting and materials used are all very sympathetic to the gallery’s setting in the Somerset landscape and the historic farm buildings.

Hauser & Wirth Somerset supports, collaborates and works in partnership with many local institutions, businesses and organisations. Its founders, global art dealers Iwan and Manuela Wirth, live locally and are patrons of a number of charities.

The gallery has been compared to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in terms of its potential to attract visitors from London and further afield to Bruton.

All public areas of Hauser & Wirth Somerset are accessible for wheelchair users. The gallery aims to be as accommodating as possible and if members of your group have disabilities or special needs, then please contact the gallery in advance of your visit to discuss your requirements.

The garden

Internationally-renowned Dutch landscape designer Piet Oudolf designed the staggeringly beautiful landscape garden around the entire site, including the 1.5 acre Oudolf Field – a large perennial meadow to the north of the farmyard and new gallery buildings.

Oudolf is a leading figure of the “New Perennial” movement, using bold drifts of herbaceous perennials and grasses which are chosen at least as much for their structure as for their flower colour.

At Hauser & Wirth Somerset, the garden recalls the tradition of classical gardens, but has a much softer and more informal character.

New trees, grasses and hedges create a landscape that frames the buildings to perfection, without obstruction views of the surrounding hills and fields.
