The Invisible Woman

Somerset Moviola and the Nunney Village Hall Committee present The Invisible Woman, on Friday 27 June at Nunney Village Hall.

The Invisible WomanIn the 1850s, Ellen Ternan is a minimally talented actress who catches the eye of the hailed British author, Charles Dickens. Bored with his intellectually unstimulating wife, Dickens takes the educated Ellen has his mistress with the cooperation of her mother.

What follows is a stormy relationship with this literary giant who provides her with a life few women of her time can enjoy. Yet, Ellen is equally revolted by Charles’ emotional cruelty and determination to keep her secret. In that conflict, Ellen must judge her own role in her life and decide if the price she pays is bearable.

The film has a 12A certificate and was nominated for an Oscar and a Bafta for costume design. Directed by Ralph Fiennes (who also stars as the conceited Charles Dickens!), this is “an engrossing drama” with a “mesmerising” performance by Felicity Jones (as his beguiling, secret lover Nelly Ternan).

There is sensitive support from Joanna Scanlan (as Dickens’ neglected wife) and Kristen Scott Thomas (as Nelly’s mother, complicit in the affair). But which one of these women is truly ‘the invisible woman’? Decide for yourself!

The Invisible Woman is shown at Nunney Village Hall on Friday 27 June at 7.30pm. Door open at 7.00pm. Seats cannot be reserved, so please come early.

Tickets cost £5.00 in advance at the SPAR shop in Nunney or £6.00 on the door. A licensed bar will be available.
