Mucky Pups

Mucky Pups is a group of approximately 20 volunteers who work regularly in the polytunnel with small groups of children from both Nunney Pre-School and Nunney First School.

Mucky Pups, NunneyThe school has an allotment and polytunnel.a range of backgrounds and include mums and dads of school children, volunteers who already work at the school, members of the local WI, allotments owners, a professional gardener and members of the Frome Flower Show. Volunteers with gardening knowledge are especially welcome as the children are keen to learn! Volunteers interested in working with the children need to complete a Disclosure Form.

A timetable is drawn up every year and 2 allocated volunteers cover each session. This year Mucky Pups have introduced a lunchtime Garden Club which runs Monday to Thursday, 12.20 to 12.50pm. Last year Mucky Pups had a stand, display and even some entries into the Nunney Flower Show. We enjoyed it so much that we plan to take part again this year with more entries.

Volunteers are encouraged to work along the curriculum and provide lessons plans. Volunteers also look after all the plants in the polytunnel, for example by ensuring daily watering takes place over the summer months, at weekends and when the school is closed over holidays.

Teachers and children have projects they wish to undertake in Class sessions and volunteers support these projects initiatives. A record is kept at the end of each session detailing the work that has been undertaken.

In 2012 Mucky Pups entered Nunney Flower Show again and won many prizes, and and even put on its own “Mucky Pups Flower Show” with the help of Nunney Flower Show volunteers. Awards of certificates and medals were given to the children and the show ran alongside the annual Summer Fete. A wildflower meadow path has been planted and the group has started planning a memorial sensory wildlife garden on site too.

As a group Mucky Pups has reached Level 5 of the RHS School Gardening Scheme.

Fundraising takes place by making chutney from produce grown, selling produce, painted pots of bulbs, games, cake sales etc.
