National Open Garden Scheme

The Miller’s House
Miller’s House, garden of person who considers herself to be an untidy planter! Mostly perennial garden, terraced borders, rockeries, large romantic mill pond and wild area designed for butterfly attraction and perfume, areas to sit and enjoy views of garden.

The garden is set in a small valley with the main garden above a mill pond.

The basic structure was made at the beginning of the last century but when it was taken over in 1984 it had been neglected and was overgrown with ivy, brambles and bindweed. When these were removed some choice plants were revealed but a lot more planting and additions have happened since then.

It is now planted mainly with perennials and shrubs with an eye to butterfly attraction and perfume. There are rockeries, borders, a small terraced vegetable patch; water plants and a wild paddock along the valley between the leat and Nunney Brook.

National Open Garden SchemeThe steps and path around the mill pond to the wild paddock along the valley between the leat and Nunney Brook may be wet and uneven. All children need to be kept close, the water is deep in places.

There are several corners to rest in from which to enjoy different views. Some of the areas of the garden need care when walking, in particular some of the steps and the path round the mill pond.

Don’t miss the terraced veg patch and small modern sculptures. Caution needed around mill pond steps and paths, stout footwear advisable.

Partial access, small steps into top garden accessible to visitors with restricted mobility; part of remaining garden and millpond can be viewed here.

The Miller’s House is open alongside Somerset Lodge Garden (opposite) under the National Open Garden Scheme on Sunday 1 July from 11.30am to 4pm. Teas are available.

Somerset Lodge has a wonderful display of blue and white Camassias in spring.

Somerset Lodge was created from rough pasture some 20 years ago by artist owner Lady Karen Watson, a first-time gardener. There are different aspects, formal topiaries, stunning avenue of standard roses, rare hawthorn orchard, and wildflower meadow.

The adjoining farm yard has been converted from a cattle barn to an attractive courtyard with a strong Mediterranean feel to it.

Formal yew and box topiaries form part of the garden, seek out the small tucked away secret garden leading to the wildflower meadow covered with drifts of blue and white Camassias in spring.

Long wisps of white Rosa Nevada are enhanced by the flowering pear trees Nevalis.

The adjoining farm yard and cattle barn has been converted to an attractive courtyard with a gardeners workshop and the artists gallery, all of which has a strong Mediterranean feel to it, also, incorporated is a small herb garden fruit trees and a maze.

The long since diseased box hedge has been replaced with the now well established small flowering shrub, Osmanthus.
