The Nunney Players Delicious
Nunney PlayersJust about everyone knows a Beatrix Potter story – or can summon up an image of Jemima Puddleduck in her bonnet, Peter Rabbit in his blue coat, or the unfortunate Tom Kitten rolled in dough and about to become a roly-poly pudding…

It’s the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter’s birth this year, so the Nunney Players’ version of some of her stories is very timely.

The Nunney Players DeliciousDosia Reichardt has chosen to foreground the perilous aspect of life for Potter’s animal characters, but also the basic animal behaviours that surface in polite society, even though civilisation has pressurised us into disguising them.

A primal fear of being eaten (the substratum of most fairytales) has been sublimated into a desire to avoid social embarrassment – providing much scope for comedy.

While the Victorian era is rich in children’s classics, the 1950s also produced many memorable stories, such as Charlotte’s Web, The Cat in the Hat, and of course those by Enid Blyton, in whose books food is always very important.

For this reason, and to jolt the audience away from one-dimensional cute, furry creatures, the selected tales have been set in the 1950s.

Interspersed with song and dance, and narrated by our very own Befurrley Sisters, the Nunney Players will take you through Benjamin Bunny’s night out, Mr Tod’s attempt to out-fox a vagrant badger, Jemima Puddleduck’s botched attempt to escape from the farm, the ill-fated posh dinner party hosted by Ribby the Cat, and the darkly comic tale of the rats, Samuel Whiskers and his wife, who are unwanted lodgers in Tabitha Twitchit’s chaotic household.

Come and join the Nunney Players on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 January 7.30pm at Nunney village hall. Tickets are available from the SPAR village shop and The George at Nunney at £8 for adults and £5 for children.
