Rain fails to spoil Nunney Street Market

The first Nunney Street Market & Fayre organised by Mo and Roger Bell for Nunney Community Association (NCA) was a success, despite several showers in the morning.

The event managed to overcome several challenges early on, including heavy rain earlier in the week, the loss of a car park due to another event held nearby and a team from British Gas digging up the road from Frome at 8.30am on the day because they thought the road closure created a perfect opportunity.

Early on, it looked like many were keeping a close eye on the weather forecast. The predicted showers did arrive, but soon made way for a bright and even sunny August day.

Over 140 stalls lined the streets, with many familiar elements. The Nunney Players served bacon, burgers and sausages. The church hosted a cake and book sale, whilst the tower climbs proved once again popular. Nunney First School served an excellent lunch in the village hall.

Music at the castle included the Frome Swing Band, Ant Noel & The Peabody Drakes and Nunney resident Norman Leater with the New Academic Feetwarmers. The Frome Street Bandits and Bathampton Morris Men entertained the crowds elsewhere in the village.

In the evening both The George at Nunney and Ola Barbeque at Nunney Catch hosted well-attended after parties. A team of Nunney Community Association volunteers worked until late to clear up the village.

Nunney Street Market & Fayre is the biggest fundraising event of the year for many organisations in Nunney. Previous events have enabled the NCA to provide financial support to the village playground, Nunney Village Hall, Nunney Church Raise the Roof Appeal, the BMX track, Nunney First School and other projects.

Mo and Roger Bell stepped in to organise this year’s event on a one-off basis. They are to be congratulated on a sterling job, as are the many volunteers who helped to make Nunney Street Market & Fayre possible.

The search is now on for an individual or team to organise the event from next year. For more information, please contact Roger Bell on 01373 836 377.
