Somerset Day 2018

Somerset Day 2018 takes place on 11 May, with a series of events that celebrate Somerset as a great place to live, work and play.

Somerset Day 2018

Those of us who live and work in Somerset know that our diverse region has a wealth of treasures from beautiful and historic cities, through rich farming traditions, to a business community which ranges from ground-breaking engineering and aeronautics to financial services. And let’s not forget the fantastic food and drink for which this area is perhaps most renowned.

Passion for Somerset, the not for profit community interest company (CIC) which champions this most beautiful and bountiful of British counties has the single aim of celebrating Somerset and all it has to offer, and shouting this from the treetops; you can help make sure Somerset isn’t a well-kept secret, but known to be open for business and welcoming visitors every day of the year.

Passion for Somerset’s work centres around Somerset Day held on May 11th every year, in honour of King Alfred the Great’s routing of the Vikings from his stronghold in the Somerset marshes in May 878.

Twitter users are encouraged to tweet a photo of their favourite spot on Somerset Day 2018 using the hashtag #LoveSomerset.

Somerset Day 2018 events

Events will take place across the county to mark Somerset Day 2018. St John’s Church in Taunton hosts a lunchtime concert at 12.45pm that celebrates Somerset’s history and heritage.

A full programme of events on Friday 11 to Sunday 13 May is available on the Somerset Day website. They include concerts, awards ceremonies, networking events and craft fairs.

Patrons of Somerset Day 2018 are Mrs Anne Maw, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, His Grace the Duke of Somerset DL, The Rt Revd Ruth Worsley, Bishop of Taunton, and Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis CBE.
