Nunney’s resident amateur dramatics society The Nunney Players has won countless awards.
In October 2003 Sally McCarney put up posters and delivered leaflets around the village suggesting staging a show at the village hall. People interested were asked to come to Rock Cottage for a meeting in early November.
Sally was hoping that perhaps a dozen people would show up. Over 20 arrived, however, some of whom had to sit on the floor.
The rest – as they say – is Nunney history. The first Nunney Players production took place in February 2004.
A few years later and the Nunney Players’ production list is looking rather healthy:
- Nunney Players Revue
- Shades of Summer
- Mother Goose and her Nunney Nest Egg
- Blithe Spirit
- Sinbad the Nunney Sailor
- Ernie’s Incredible Illucinations
- Gosforth’s Fete
- Dracula – The Panto
- Silent Comedy
- Shepherd’s Pie
- Man of Stone
- Dumplings and Divas
- Jack and the Beanstalk
- The Great Allotment Plot
- The Mysterious Case of the Pretty-Near-Perfect Pantomime Plot
- Visiting Hour
- A Midsummer Night’s Dream
- Dark Tales on a Dark Night
The Nunney Players unexpectedly won a bumper crop of awards in 2009 from the Somerset Fellowship of Drama (SFD), including best pantomime on a small stage. More SFD awards followed in 2010, plus an Award for Excellence across the region from the National Operatic and Dramatic Association.
Every Nunney Players production is the culmination of many people’s hard work over several months. Fancy joining? You can join as a member or a friend, whether you want to be on stage, backstage or in the audience. You don’t even have to live in Nunney; many members from outside the village have already joined The Nunney Players.
