The George wins Wadworth Retailer of the Year

The George at Nunney has won the much-coveted Retailer of the Year Award, beating 240 other pubs owned by Wadworth Brewery.

Wadworth Retailer of the YearGordon Hedges and Sharon Farmer, owner and manager of The George, received the honour at a dinner organised by the brewery at The Bear Hotel in Devizes on Monday 2 December.

Wadworth has over 240 pubs spread across 600 square miles of the South West of Britain. Wadworth have been brewing beer in Devizes since 1875.

Founded by Henry A Wadworth, the business passed to his founding partner John Smith Bartholomew and is now in the 4th generation of management by the Bartholomew family.

The annual event recognises the best of the best in various categories ending in the hotly contested Best Tenant and Best Manager Awards.

Gordon Hedges, who had no prior experience of running a hospitality business, took over The George at Nunney on 16 April 2012. Since then, the country inn has had a complete makeover and is packed for lunch and dinner every day of the week. The hotel is also booked to capacity, backed by rave reviews on Tripadvisor.

Gordon Hedges said: “We’re very proud to have been awarded ‘Winner – Retailer of the year 2013’ throughout the entire Wadworth estate of over 240 pubs. Its one of the top awards of the night and we thank all our valued customers and staff who have helped us achieve such an accolade.”

Fund raising was also on the agenda as the 80 strong attendees raised in excess of £800 for Wiltshire charity ‘The Community Foundation’. Spirits were high in the room as rousing cheers were given for all of the winners for this year’s event making it one to remember.

Wadworth Chairman Charles Bartholomew opened the evening with a speech thanking all of the nominees for their hard work. He also acknowledged their business styles. “Whether it is great beer or great food, great service, being nice to customers, understanding what they want and delivering that is what we recognise and celebrate tonight.”

“Throughout our estate we have are lucky to have great pubs with fantastic people in them,” said Paul Sullivan, Sales and Marketing Director. “The Toast of Wadworthshire awards is special event in our calendar, as a business it is important for us to celebrate the exceptional work that has been going on over the past 12 months, well done to all of the winners.”

The George at Nunney and Visit Nunney host a two-day Nunney Christmas Market on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 December.
